Is There A Connection Between Swimming And Acne?

Ever notice how dry your skin can get after a long day at the pool? Well guess what? The excessive drying of the skin after a dip in the pool actually works to prevent acne!

Since I have an outdoor pool where I live, when summer comes along I start going to the pool far more often than during the cold, winter months. I’ve also started to observe that it is about 3X easier to maintain acne-free skin during this time than during the winter! My skin is always feeling so revitalized, clear, and healthy after a swim at the pool, so I’ve decided to discover if there really is a decent and sound connection between swimming and acne.

Here are the reasons I have found that prove that swimming can do wonders for your complexion:

–The main chemical in the pool is chlorine, which is a powerful antibacterial agent – killing nearly all of the sebum (acne-causing bacteria) on the surface of the skin, and also drying out pore-clogging oils.

–Some pools do not contain harmful chemicals, and instead they contain salt. Salt is also an anti-bacterial agent, in some cases it works even better than chlorine! Acne at its core is just an inflammation of the skin, and one of the very best solutions to inflammation is salt! By spending time swimming in salt water, you are healing your skin and reducing the chance of breakouts in the future!

–Soaking up extra sun rays will also help you maintain clear skin. Like chlorine and salt, the sun does its job in helping to remove oils from the skin that shouldn’t be there. However, make sure not to get so much sun that you get burnt! But a healthy amount of sunlight will provide you with vitamin D and other vital nutrients that make it possible to achieve a clear, glowing complexion!

–Swimming is one of the best physical activities for healthy skin. This is because breathing becomes deeper and more useful, meaning more oxygen is derived from each breath than during normal activity. More oxygen in your bloodstream means faster reduction of acne-causing bacteria from the surface of the skin and a speedy healing process for current breakouts and new healthy skin cells!

Is the only way to get clear skin to swim every single day? Of course not! But it definitely helps, and if you love swimming this will be just another great benefit.
