Calendula Lotion Contains Numerous Healing Properties

Calendula lotion has many medicinal uses. Taken from the Latin word, calends, calendula literally means ‘the first day of the month’. Native to the hot climates of the Mediterranean, as well as Egypt, the plant blossoms throughout the year on the first day of each month.

With gorgeous bright orange petals, it stands to reason that it is called the flower of the sun. The calendula is also referred to as the pot marigold but, unlike its more common counterpart, it is much bigger. Throughout the course of history, its medicinal qualities have been recognized. It is without doubt one of the most versatile of all herbs.

For hundreds of years, the calendula has been venerated and some traditions declared it to be the symbol of endurance. Cuts and wounds were treated with calendula petals because of their antiseptic and healing properties which combat infection and encourage rapid healing.

Apart from its antiseptic properties, the plant also acts as an anti-inflammatory, an antifungal, an astringent as well as an antiviral. The lotion can also treat minor skin problems, sunburn, burns, rashes, acne and fungal problems. Many mothers use it for diaper rash and to soothe their nipples while breastfeeding.

Calendula has always been acclaimed for its healing powers. The flowers also contain bacteria-fighting essential oils. The plant contains organic acids, calendulin, and enzymes, all of which can help fight infection and boost the immune system.

The lotion can also help repair tissues, minimize scarring, reduce swelling and decrease venous congestion. According to ancient folklore, the calendula also fosters compassion, caring and warmth to other people. This goes to show that these old civilizations were very aware of holistic healing.

When calendula lotion is made these days, other ingredients are added to increase its efficacy. Included are beeswax, vitamin E, coconut oil, apricot oil, and olive oil. We all know about the restorative and soothing effects of olive oil and that apricot oil can soften and moisturize skin. Vitamin E is a useful antioxidant and coconut oil is a good lubricant.

The lotion is quickly absorbed into the skin when applied, so your clothes won’t get spoiled or marked. Calendula lotion also has the ability to rectify the skin’s pH balance therefore it can be used to treat eczema and very dry skin. Indeed, this historic herb has proved its efficacy for generations. Little wonder it is called ‘the flower of the sun’.
